Archaeologist group opposes Act 250 changes

Archaeologists aren’t ordinarily involved in regulatory battles and political infighting. But a handful of those in the profession have formed in recent weeks to oppose a state proposal to alter the rules around development.

At the heart of the issue are changes to the rules around when archeological surveys are required before a project can be built. Those changes, still in draft form, are intended to clarify rules around the state’s Act 250 land use laws, according to state officials.

But the newly formed Vermont Professional Archaeologists’ Association warns those changes could, if put into law, result in the loss of historical artifacts and also, in much less archaeology in Vermont.
