Quickie update

Filed under: Blogging update — acagle @ 6:46 am

Still here in the Land Flowing With Milk and Beer. I’d actually had some plans to do a little posting while on vacation, but those were unfortunately cut up quite short: My second night here my mom had a bad stroke. Right in the room with me.

After a 911 call, trip to the ER, and then a midnight (literally) drive to Milwaukee, mom was in the ICU until yesterday. She is out now and into the stroke center/rehab portion of the hospital and is responding to commands. The area affected is a small but important one controlling, among other things, the area around the face and neck so breathing (actually maintaining an airway, which is different) was an issue. And, although we’ve been told this is an area of the brain that does well at rerouting, we won’t know what the real prognosis is for weeks if not months. Mom is quite independent and healthy (she’s been swimming almost every day for years now) so this was a great shock to all.

My brother is coming to relieve me today and I will head back to Seattle for a couple of weeks and then probably come back for a while, depending on how things are going, where mom is, etc.

Whether you’re a parent or an offspring, make sure everybody’s powers of attorney papers are all in order. Offspring need to know what your wishes are, at least generally, in case of incapacitation.

  1. I am sorry to hear about your mother. She is lucky to have such a good son by her side.

  2. Very sorry to hear that.
It does suck to go through
    such occurrences, for all involved.
I hope she gets better soon.

  5. Thanks, all. She’s still in the horse-pistol but the recovery is verrrrrry slow.
