Notes from the field

Filed under: Egypt — acagle @ 5:40 am

No photos today because A) We didn’t go to the field, and B) I only just a while ago got my iPod camera connecting. Cairo was fun, went to the ‘mids in the morning (no photos) which I found kind of boring (seen ‘em before), but it was nice walking around with the others. We went to a big western-style shopping mall and a place called Carfours where I obtained several needed supplies (towel, QTips, etc.). Quite a nice break of clean, healthy consumerism for a change. We hit the Meridien pool for all of ten minutes (closed at dusk) but I got two laps of their big circular pool at least, and that was glorious after being all hot and sweaty most of the day. Came back last night and did paperwork today, which was much needed because I find out what stuff I missed doing in the field.

Should have some good photos tomorrow of some more new junk I uncovered on Thursday including a granite basin. Ehshallah the camera will work out.

Oh, I finally got to see what one of these demonstrations looks like as our driver took up on a circuitous route to the mall and we ended up in the middle of a smaller one. Peaceful. I got handed a flier and am keeping it as a souvenir.

Anyone know a low-tech method of cleaning grit out of a camera?

UPDATE: Oh, a note on the pyramids. I recall hearing that Zahi Hawass had cleared out all of the souvenir sellers and what-not from the pyramid plateau. If so, they came back since he’s gone. All.Over.The.Place. Mostly a non-irritant for me but it’s kind of a circus there now.
