Start of excavation today! Minimally anyway. Mostly getting rid of sand that looters had tossed around. Some neat stuff in it though, a woven mat, some cordage, a few worked pieces of wood, etc. No photos, as I failed to bring my camera out there; will rectify that tomorrow. We’re all in the same area finishing up some stuff in a granary area, in a day or two we’ll split up to our respective trenches. I should be getting an old kiln trench to explore more.
Our biggest problem this morning was getting there: the local cattle market takes place Saturday so our road was jammed. Otherwise, things went pretty well. I went for two walks yesterday (on Friday, the “weekend”), one to the village to snag some soda, and one to try to reach the Birket Qarun. Never made the latter, as I walked a half hour and was still a mile away and the road was turning. It’ll still be there for 7 more weeks, I presume. Otherwise, hopefully more photos soon, but some have gone up on my Facebook page.
I guess there was some trouble in Cairo yesterday but we neither knew nor cared. Well, some of our people were in Cairo, but had nothing to do with any of it.
