Last post before leaving. Lift off isn’t until (early) Sunday morning, but I shan’t be posting tomorrow (Saturday), so this is it until I perhaps find time and Interweb connectivity to post in Egypt. I’ve arranged for the usual ArchaeoFriend and also Andie to take over while I’m away.
Also check out ye olde Twitter account, from which I’ll probably be doing more posting, as it’s much less bandwidth (@ArchaeoBlog).
For your viewing pleasure — not, sadly, a nice photo of Olivia Wilde — but a couple of Modern Artifacts:
Most of the stuff I’m taking with me. Amazing, isn’t it? I will be living for two months on that small of a pile of stuff. Maybe a bit more. And NO those are not PINK. That’s one of the reasons I decided to go back: it really is a refreshing change to live for a while with an absolute minimum amount of stuff: It’s just you, a few items you can carry, and whatever work you’re doing. Makes one appreciate home life much more. Also no TV, which I actually don’t miss while there (though I shall be missing college football this year, *sigh*). I’m really treating this something like a monastic retreat, albeit with a bunch of interesting work.
Picked up two vinyls yesterday and had to control myself cuz there were hundreds of LPs! I never had a ZZ Top record before so this is my first. That one seemed in good shape but sounded really scratchy at first so I washed it in the sink with soap and water and it came out much better, though still a bit crackly at the beginning. Equinox is in better shape (though with a pop or two); I’d forgotten how great an album that is. Not at all like their later stuff, for you who didn’t get them in the 1970s (aka, Mr. Roboto and such). Really hard rock but sort of prog, too. Love it. I don’t know if I ever had this one, but I vaguely remember it — well, I remember listening to it but it might have been on tape. Whatever, I love it.
I also got a bunch of the plastic sleeves to protect the other ones I have. Been meaning to do that for a while and finally found a place that has them.
So that’s it, when I next post I will either be in Egypt or en route, as they say. Be nice to the ladies, and I hope to get some posts and photos ‘from the field’ (literally).
