Modern artifacts: What I’m listening to Right Now

Desert Fox

That is (I believe) the very first classical music LP I ever bought. One of my very favorites. I think I sent that one back from my parents’ home in Wisconsin a couple of years ago, so I’m pretty sure it is an old purchase. As I noted in this post I really hit on Vivaldi as an undergrad studying archaeology, so it has a strong nostalgic hold on me. There’s also something about the lute and mandolin concerti that really get to me. They sound kind of modern, in a way, perhaps because that was one of the first classical albums I was aware of that used guitar-like instruments, which I’d only associated with modern music. Still gives me a feeling of peaceful relaxation, although not of the sitting-around-doing-nothing sort; more of the doing some kind of work that is still relaxing, such as identifying bone fragments and such.

At any rate, the LP still sounds really good, although I have better recordings on better media, but I still like playing the LP every now and then for old time’s sake.
